Confidential Manufacturing Facility Addition

Northern, IL

Project Overview:

Morse Electric began working on this 125,000 sq. ft. addition to an existing manufacturing facility in April 2023. The project was completed in four phases. The scope of work included new electrical service, medium-voltage, process packaging, lighting, utilities, and data. At its peak, there were over 70 electricians working on the project. In total, crews worked over 320,000 hours without any lost time injuries!

Project Description:

Congestion, limited access, and material availability were just a few challenges Morse Electric overcame while completing this project. Trades met daily to coordinate labor and scheduling. Without the cooperation of all trades, work could end up delayed because an area was unexpectedly inaccessible. A lot of forethought and planning went into the electrical installation. All components in the electrical room were installed in a large open area. The walls and curbs were added at a later date to enclose the room. The process area in the facility is congested with industry specific items including a mezzanine, tanks, and process equipment. Engineers incorporated vertical cable tray installed against the walls to allow for easier accessibility for future expansion. A two-tiered cable tray system was utilized to route the feeders for the electrical rooms over the roof instead of underground. Each cable tray held 12 cables, spanned approximately 170’, and supported a total weight of almost 2,000 pounds! Lastly, Morse Electric installed temporary transformers on I-beams as a value added solution for the customer. By utilizing I-beams, the temporary transformers could be set at the finish height of the permanent transformers. This eliminated the need to install temporary cabling and pull new cables for the final installation.
