JANESVILLE, WI
Mercyhealth Michael Berry Building Vertical Expansion

The Mercyhealth Michael Berry Building (MBB) Vertical Expansion project consists of a 32,000 sq. ft. third floor addition that houses a new 10,000 sq. ft. dialysis clinic. The clinic features 20 dialysis bays, three special treatment rooms, and two isolation rooms along with nurse stations and a lobby/reception area. The remaining 22,000 sq.ft. will be used for future facility expansions. Morse Electric’s scope of work consisted of installing both the normal and emergency power systems, and running the conduit, cable tray, and cabling needed for lighting control, data, access control, fire alarm, and paging. Additional scope included wiring an air handling unit (third floor) and new chiller (entire building). This 8-month long project was completed in June 2023 and opened it’s doors to patients in early July.

extending existing systems

The vertical building expansion required extending existing systems such as fire alarm, paging, exhaust fans, and environmental monitoring from the second floor to the new third floor. This required close coordination between the general contractor, electricians, and clinic manager to ensure the hospital stayed 100% operational throughout construction. This was accomplished through careful scheduling around patient care and clinic hours. Most of the new switchgear and automatic transfer switches were installed between 7pm and 6am.

managing an aggressive schedule

Completing the MBB Vertical Expansion in just eight short months was no small feat. Morse Electric crews had to think out-of-the-box to keep pace with such an aggressive schedule. One time saving solution included bringing in a second foreman, Brad Albrecht, to focus on the emergency system upgrades including a new generator, automatic transfer switch, and emergency power electrical room.

MEET THE FOREMAN

Brandon Beaudo has been with The Morse Group since 2020 and was the foreman for the MBB Vertical Expansion project. As a first-time foreman, Brandon was focused on maintaining a good, safe working environment while keeping pace with the schedule. Throughout this project, Brandon gained in-depth knowledge of electrical installations within a healthcare facility and is happy to add this experience to his resume. He thanks his crew for their efforts to meet the project timelines, sharing their wisdom, guidance, and expertise, and helping make his first project as foreman a success!
