Youth Apprentice learning to wire a backplate

Corbin, a high school senior, first became interested in the electrical industry after taking a home and auto maintenance class at his high school. The course included an electrical unit where they learned how to wire a switch, a concept that clicked for Corbin and sparked his curiosity. Eager to learn more, he reached out to a family friend, who helped him arrange a job shadow at Automation Solutions of America (ASA) in the Panel Shop.

After completing the job shadow, Corbin knew that this was the career path he wanted to pursue. With the support of his school counselor, he secured a youth apprenticeship at ASA, allowing him to gain hands-on experience while earning credits toward graduation.

Corbin started his Youth Apprenticeship in June 2024, and over the past eight months, he’s had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from seasoned professionals in the panel shop.

One project Corbin is particularly proud of is an industrial control panel he worked on with his mentor Bob. After collaborating on the project for two weeks, Corbin took the lead. Thanks to the skills he’d developed during his apprenticeship, he was able to continue the project on his own, seeking guidance when needed to keep the build on track.

Once Corbin’s apprenticeship ends, he plans to continue to work in the panel shop while he furthers his education at Blackhawk Technical College, pursuing a degree in Automation Systems Technology.
